Abstract

The integrated library system (ILS) has traditionally focused on managing all aspects of the library’s operations. The ILS includes functionality and modules that are tightly integrated and deliver an all-in-one approach for library management. But has this decades-old model run its course? Would libraries benefit from a new model based on openness at the core, allowing for choice of applications from multiple providers, both vendors and libraries alike?

For libraries, there is much at stake and the question at hand may indeed be one of real extensibility. In other words, extending the library into new areas of relevance from knowledge creation, to data mining, research and learning objectives, and overall institutional needs. If the all-in-one, monolithic ILS has traditionally limited adoption of ‘best of breed’ applications, the redefined ILS must have integration and extensibility at its core. This would allow for the ready deployment and integration of a variety of applications and services in support of flexible workflows and end-user needs.

This presentation will look at principles of end-user outcomes, openness, community and choice as the core of library technology and the library’s services platform in particular. The presenter will discuss the ideas behind platform extensibility; one that allows for the ready deployment, development, enhancement, and integration of applications from multiple providers in support of continuously evolving library and end-user needs.
