»I want it all – I want it now«: how to work with youngsters in the school library

Abstract

Teens have 24/7 access to a (global) market of information, resources, products and gadgets. They are the »Homo Zappiens« of today. Do they still need a school library or a school librarian if they can access all information and tools anywhere and always? And if so, are we prepared to deal with their wishes and attitudes? What are the challenges and opportunities for teachers and school librarians? What is the role of the school library in the web 2.0 world?

The school library has to reinvent itself and take a clear and powerful place in the new (global) market in order to meet the demands of the 21st century society. The school library needs to offer surplus value to the overwhelming number of tools and guidance how to use the content that is offered nowadays. This includes a clear vision on the school libraries’ core business, understanding (of youngsters, their behaviour and desires) and leadership to influence teachers and partners to fulfil the educational needs.

The tags to this new environment should be: quality, attractiveness, surplus value, community and LEARNING.
