John D. Aber. - New Haven, CT ; London : Yale University Press, [2023]
Renowned environmental scientist and educator John D. Aber distills what he has learned from a long fascination with weather and climate, the process of science, and the telling of the story of science. This is not a book about policies and politics. Instead, it explores how weather happens, how it relates to climate, and how science has been used to answer major questions about the Earth as a system and inform policies that have reversed environmental degradation.

Roland Ennos. - New York : Scribner, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, 2023
In ’The Science of Spin’, Roland Ennos shows how rotational motion dominates the workings of the world around us. It has shaped the solar system, galaxies, and black holes. It controls our climate and weather—from the pattern of trade winds to the local formation of hurricanes and tornadoes. Harnessing the power of spin helped launch civilization, from the first developments of the wheel to the systems that now add force the industrial world—propellers, turbines, centrifugal pumps, electric motors, and computer disk drives. Even our own bodies are complex systems of rotating joints and levers.

Gregory J. Gbur. - New Haven ; London : Yale University Press, [2023]
In this book, science writer and optical physicist Gregory J. Gbur traces the science of invisibility from its sci-fi origins in the nineteenth-century writings of authors such as H. G. Wells and Fitz James O’Brien to modern stealth technology, invisibility cloaks, and metamaterials. He explores the history of invisibility and its science and technology connections, including the discovery of the electromagnetic spectrum, the development of the atomic model, and quantum theory. He shows how invisibility has moved from fiction to reality, and he questions the hidden paths that lie ahead for researchers.

This is the story of Esther Simpson, a woman whose dedication to the cause of freedom in science and learning left an indelible mark on the cultural and intellectual landscape of the modern world. Esther Simpson devoted her life to resettling academic refugees, whom she thought of as her family. By the end of her life, Simpson could count among her ‘children’ sixteen Nobel Prize winners, eighteen Knights, seventy-four fellows of the Royal Society, thirty-four fellows of the British Academy. For a woman who befriended so many and such eminent ‘children’, surprisingly little is known of her. This book is a study of Esther Simpson.

This book was mostly written by a machine that was programmed to search a system of equations for chaotic solutions, simplify the equations to the extent possible, analyze the behavior, produce figures, and write the accompanying text. The equations are coupled autonomous ordinary differential equations with three variables and at least one nonlinearity. Fifty simple systems are included. A goal of this book is to inspire and delight as well as to teach. It provides a wealth of examples ripe for further study and extension.

This book is focused on studying eigenfunctions as a primary object for any g². Perturbation theory in g² for the logarithm of the wavefunction is matched to the true semiclassical expansion in powers of ℏ: it leads to locally-highly-accurate, uniform approximation valid for any g²∈[0,∞) for eigenfunctions and even more accurate results for eigenvalues. This method of matching can be easily extended to the general anharmonic oscillator as well as to the radial oscillators. Quartic, sextic and cubic (for radial case) oscillators are considered in detail as well as quartic double-well potential.
