Nanothermodynamics: theory and applications

Nanothermodynamics: theory and applications

Dick Bedeaux, Signe Kjelstrup, Sondre K Schnell. - New Jersey ; London ; Singapore ; Beijing ; Shanghai ; Hong Kong ; Taipei ; Chennai ; Tokyo : World Scientific, [2024]

This book grew out of an idea to study properties of small subsystems of a large reservoir. Observations were at the time not explainable with standard thermodynamics. But the theory of Hill on thermodynamics of small systems provided the systematic procedure needed to address the problem. Following Hill, thermodynamics can be formulated for the nanoscale! The purpose of this book is to expand and demonstrate Hill’s theory. The theory adds a new term to the fundamental Gibbs equation, that is specific for systems at the nanoscale. The properties that follow may be counter intuitive.

Nonlinear optics on ferroic materials

Nonlinear optics on ferroic materials

Manfred Fiebig. - Weinheim : Wiley-VCH, [2024]

The use of nonlinear optics for the study of ferroics, that is, magnetically, electrically or otherwise spontaneously ordered and switchable materials has witnessed a remarkable development since its inception with the invention of the laser in the 1960s. This book reviews and advances an overarching concept of ferroic order and its exploration by nonlinear-optical methods. In doing so, it brings together three fields of physics: symmetry, ferroic order, and nonlinear laser spectroscopy.

Energy: what about it?

Energy: what about it?

Jean Pierre Fillard. - New Jersey ; London ; Singapore : World Scientific, [2024]

This book is designed to provide readers with a general understanding of energy. It explores the topic by beginning with what "energy" means and where it comes from; the different forms of energy we currently known and when they were discovered; as well as the innovative breakthroughs and historical milestones which followed their discovery. It then expounds on how each newly discovered form of energy with the use of increased scientific and engineering knowhow needed for these discoveries, and their impacts that have powered our evolution of human civilizations, before arriving at the central concern of the 21st century: how long will humanity’s access to energy last?

Einstein in time and space: a life in 99 particles

Samuel Graydon. - New York : Scribner, 2023

Most of us would agree that Albert Einstein’s name is synonymous with “genius” and that his likeness is often used as a shorthand for all scientists, appearing everywhere from cartoons to textbooks. He has become more myth than man. That being the case, how best to capture his essence? In ’Einstein in Time and Space’, talented young science journalist Samuel Graydon answers that question with an illuminating mosaic—99 intriguingly different particles that cumulatively reveal Einstein’s contradictory and multitudinous nature.

A brief introduction to classical mechanics with illustrative problems

A brief introduction to classical mechanics with illustrative problems

Shahen Hacyan. - New Jersey ; London ; Singapore : World Scientific, [2024]

Based on the lecture notes for a course on Classical Mechanics, students with a basic knowledge of calculus should be able to follow this book. Unlike other textbooks, exercises are not included because the main goal is to equip students with the skills to problem-solve. An old-fashioned yet efficient method has been to provide a step-by-step derivation of the fundamental formulas, giving students an overview of the subject through various illustrative examples and showing how to apply the general results to relevant problems in Classical Mechanics.

The reinvention of science: slaying the dragons of dogma and ignorance

Bernard J.T. Jones, Vicent J. Martínez, Virginia L. Trimble. - New Jersey ; London ; Singapore : World Scientific, [2024]

The book evolved into a more extensive history of how science evolved through controversy, suppression, and the desire to maintain the status quo. Our story passes from the Babylonians and Greeks through the middle ages, the renaissance and the scientific revolution to almost current events. We discuss the evolution of our world, the controversy about the extinction of dinosaurs, and open questions in contemporary science such as dark matter, black holes and the origin of the Universe, including how we understand the subatomic world of elementary particles.

Field theory of condensed matter and ultracold gases. Volume 1

Nicolas Dupuis. - New Jersey ; London ; Singapore ; Beijing ; Shanghai ; Hong Kong ; Taipei ; Chennai ; Tokyo : World Scientific, [2023]

This book provides a pedagogical introduction to the concepts and methods of quantum field theory necessary for the study of condensed matter and ultracold atomic gases. The focus is on the study of model Hamiltonians, where the microscopic physics and characteristic energy scales are encoded into a few effective parameters, rather than first-principle methods which start from a realistic Hamiltonian at the microscopic level and then make material-specific predictions.

The book is a research monograph. An asymptotically exact solution of the many-body scattering problem is given under the assumption a ≪ d ≪ λ. Scattering of scalar and electromagnetic waves is considered. Heat transfer theory in the medium in which many small bodies are embedded is developed. Quantum-mechanical theory of scattering by many potentials with small support is constructed. On the basis of these theoretical results, important applications are presented.

Maria Rentetzi. - Pittsburgh, Pa. : University of Pittsburgh Press, [2022]

The discovery of radium by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898 eventually led to a craze for radium products in the 1920s until their widespread use proved lethal for consumers, patients, and medical practitioners alike. Radium infiltrated American culture, Maria Rentetzi reveals, not only because of its potential to treat cancer but because it was transformed from a scientific object into a familiar, desirable commodity. She explores how the first successful commercial producer of radium in the US aggressively promoted the benefits of radium therapy and its curative properties as part of a lucrative business strategy.
