A practical introduction to beam physics and particle accelerators

A practical introduction to beam physics and particle accelerators

Santiago Bernal . - San Rafael, CA Morgan & Claypool Publishers, 2018

This book provides a brief exposition of the principles of beam physics and particle accelerators with an emphasis on numerical examples employing readily available computer tools. However, it avoids detailed derivations, instead inviting the reader to use general high-end languages such as Mathcad and Matlab, as well as specialized particle accelerator codes (e.g. MAD, WinAgile, Elegant, and others) to explore the principles presented. This approach allows readers to readily identify relevant design parameters and their scaling.

Creating the molecules of life

Creating the molecules of life

Richard N Boyd, Michael A Famiano . - Bristol, UK IOP Publishing, 2018

This book discusses origins, including the Big Bang, and the origin of the elements. With a complete presentation and explanation, this book provides evidence that the molecules of life are produced in outer space and how the SNAAP model purports to explain that origin. Extremophiles, which explains that evolution is robust enough to create life forms in a wide variety of conditions, is also presented. Readable for those at the upper undergraduate level, mathematics associated with coupling the nuclear spins to the molecular chirality is discussed. An accompanied appendix is provided to support mathematics.

Fourier transform and its applications using Microsoft EXCEL

Shinil Cho . - San Rafael, CA, USA Morgan & Claypool Publishers, 2018

This book demonstrates Microsoft EXCEL®-based Fourier transform of selected physics examples, as well as describing spectral density of the auto-regression process in relation to Fourier transform. Rather than offering rigorous mathematics, the book provides readers with an opportunity to gain an understanding of Fourier transform through the examples. They will acquire and analyze their own data following the step-by-step procedure outlined, and a hands-on acoustic spectral analysis is suggested as the ideal long-term student project.

Numerical solutions of boundary value problems with finite difference method

Numerical solutions of boundary value problems with finite difference method

Sujaul Chowdhury, Ponkog Kumar Das and Syed Badiuzzaman Faruque . - San Rafael, CA, USA Morgan & Claypool Publishers, 2018

The book contains an extensive illustration of use of finite difference method in solving the boundary value problem numerically. A wide class of differential equations has been numerically solved in this book. Mathematica 6.0 has been used to solve the system of linear equations that we encountered and to plot the numerical data. Comparison with known analytic solutions showed nearly perfect agreement in every case. On reading this book, readers will become adept in using the method.

Is it the ’same’ result: replication in physics

Is it the ’same’ result: replication in physics

Allan Franklin . - San Rafael, CA Morgan & Claypool Publishers, 2018

Replication, the independent confirmation of experimental results and conclusions, is regarded as the ’gold standard’ in science. This book examines the question of successful or failed replications and demonstrates that that question is not always easy to answer. It presents clear examples of successful replications, the discoveries of the Higgs boson and of gravity waves. Failed replications include early experiments on the Fifth Force, a proposed modification of Newton’s Law of universal gravitation, and the measurements of ’G’, the constant in that law. Other case studies illustrate some of the difficulties and complexities in deciding whether a replication is successful or failed.

Truth and traceability in physics and metrology

Truth and traceability in physics and metrology

Michael Grabe . - San Rafael, CA, USA Morgan & Claypool Publishers, 2018

Metrological data is known to be blurred by the imperfections of the measuring process. This book discusses a new error concept dispensing with the common practice to randomize unknown systematic errors. Instead, unknown systematic errors will be treated as what they physically are—namely as constants being unknown with respect to magnitude and sign. The ideas considered in this book issue a proceeding steadily localizing the true values of the measurands and consequently traceability.

The physics of DNA and chromosomes

Davide Marenduzzo . - Bristol, UK IOP Publishing, 2018

A liver and a brain cell contain exactly the same genetic material, as they come from the same egg cell, yet they work very differently, because the patterns of genes that are on and off in the two is completely distinct. How is this at all possible? Biophysicists have found general principles that are beginning to answer these and similar questions. In this ebook we explore some of these principles, and describe a selection of topics where physicists have contributed to our current understanding of DNA and chromosomes.

The most interesting galaxies in the universe

The most interesting galaxies in the universe

Joel L. Schiff . - San Rafael, CA, USA Morgan & Claypool Publishers, 2018

Prior to the 1920s it was generally thought, with a few exceptions, that our galaxy, the Milky Way, was the entire Universe. Based on the work of Henrietta Leavitt with Cepheid variables, astronomer Edwin Hubble was able to determine that the Andromeda Galaxy and others had to lie outside our own. Moreover, based on the work of Vesto Slipher, involving the redshifts of these galaxies, Hubble was able to determine that the Universe was not static, as had been previously thought, but expanding.

Redefining the kilogram and other SI units

Redefining the kilogram and other SI units

Stephan Schlamminger . - Bristol, UK IOP Publishing, 2018

The International System of Units (SI) provides a widely used coherent framework of units. While the present SI is fit for purpose for all measurements, it has several shortcomings. Most notably, the kilogram is defined via an artifact that limits its realization to a specific place and certain times. To solve this problem and to take advantage of advances in quantum metrology made in the last 50 years, a revision of the SI is planned. This revision will modify the foundation of the SI from base units to fundamental constants of nature. While the revision presents a huge shift in philosophy, the size of the units will not change, and hence the revision will go mostly unnoticed.
