Am 27. Juni 2002 um 18 Uhr sprach Ruth Lewin Sime im Konferenzraum des Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF, Weyringergasse 35, 1040 Wien) über Lise Meitner und ihre Rolle bei der Entdeckung der Kernspaltung.
»Lise Meitner’s life reflected her times to a remarkable extent. She was among the leading atomic physicists of her day, one of the first women to succeed in a very male domain, and in 1938 a desperate refugee from Germany whose contributions to the discovery of nuclear fission were unjustly obscured. In my talk I shall focus on Meitner and her physics, emphasizing the interdisciplinary science behind the discovery. I shall also discuss the political conditions that affected the way the discovery was reported, understood, and recognized during the Nazi years and in the postwar period.«
